Man dies on I-81
FOSTER TOWNSHIP - A Scranton man was killed and four others injured in a Sunday morning one-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 near Foster Township, Schuylkill County.
State police at Frackville reported that Garfield Beynon, 71, of Scranton was pronounced dead at the scene of the 10:44 a.m. crash by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Scott Clews.
The driver of the vehicle, Jeffrey Delguercio, 51, of Dickson City, and three male juveniles were transported to Schuylkill Medical Center East, Pottsville, for treatment of minor injuries.
According to police, the five individuals were traveling north on Interstate 81 in a 2004 Ford Explorer in the area of mile marker 114.3 when the vehicle veered to the left toward a guide rail on the west side of the road.
Delguercio steered to the right to avoid striking the guide rail, and the Explorer crossed both lanes of Interstate 81 and struck a guide rail on the east side, then flipping onto the passenger side and coming to rest along the east shoulder.
Police said Delguercio said all occupants were wearing their seat belts, and that the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
