Man charged in Ashland stabbing
ASHLAND - One person was injured and another committed to Schuylkill County Prison following a stabbing incident in the 900 block of Brock Street Wednesday evening.
Ashland Borough Police reported officers were called to 921 Brock Street at approximately 10:50 p.m. Wednesday and found Joseph Scheib, of Tower City, with a stab wound to his upper chest and left hand.
Police said the suspect and owner of the residence, James A. Whitman, 23, fled the scene before police arrived.
A search was conducted at a wooded area south of Vine Street, where Whitman was believed to have fled. They were soon called back to the Brock Street residence when a neighbor reported Whitman was walking in his yard.
The suspect was then found hiding in the basement of the home and taken into custody, police said. He was then committed to Schuylkill County Prison on a Lebanon County bench warrant for failure to appear for a hearing.
Whitman was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, possessing the instruments of a crime and terroristic threats.
He was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Christina E. Hale, of Frackville. and recommitted to Schuylkill County Prison on $50,000 straight bail.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 6, before Hale. An update on Scheib's condition was not available Friday from Schuylkill South Medical Center, Pottsville.
Assisting police with the search were members of the Butler Township and Girardville Police Department.
