Man charged for 'sexting,' having sexual encounters with 14-year-old
LOCUST TOWNSHIP - A Catawissa man has been charged with having sexual contact with a 14-year-old girl and possessing 33 nude photos of the victim on his cell phone.
Police said the incidents occurred between early January and the middle of March.
Tyler Kanas, 19, of 1919-A Old Reading Road, was arraigned at 8:30 p.m. Thursday by on-call Magisterial District Judge Doug Brewer of Millville on felonies of aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, sexual abuse of children and criminal use of a communication facility involving incidents at the victim's home.
Locust Township Patrolman Christopher Snyder filed the charges.
Following his arraignment, Kanas was committed to Columbia County Prison, Bloomsburg, in lieu of $20,000 bail. He was freed Friday morning after posting bail and is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing before Magisterial District Judge Craig Long, of Catawissa, at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.
Snyder said an investigation began April 19 when the victim's father contacted police about wanting to end an inappropriate relationship between his daughter and Kanas. Police then contacted the defendant, who agreed to no longer have contact with the girl.
But on May 7, police received a telephone call from the victim's father who found messages on her daughter's cell phone that suggested she was still involved with Kanas.
The defendant said he broke up with the teen May 6.
Kanas said the victim texted naked pictures of herself, but he denied sending any naked photos back to her. He later admitted he asked the girl to send him nude photos. He also admitted sending the victim one nude picture of himself.
He also told police he initiated sexual encounters with the teen.
The victim told police Kanas asked her for the photos, and she said she initially felt uncomfortable sending nude pictures of herself, but continued to do so. She said Kanas promised her he wouldn't show the pictures to anyone. The girl said Kanas sent her three nude pictures of himself, including one he sent on three separate occasions.
