Editor's note: This is the first in an occasional series of stories on spring musicals at area high schools.
COAL TOWNSHIP - Our Lady of Lourdes High School performing arts students will present the musical "Godspell" March 19, 20 and 21 at the Northumberland County Career and Arts Center, Eighth and Arch streets, Shamokin.
Performance times are 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. The annual spring production is under the direction of Vic Boris.
"Godspell," conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, offers music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz.
The show opened May 17, 1971, off-Broadway and transferred to Broadway in 1976.
One of the biggest off-Broadway and Broadway successes of all time, "Godspell" is based primarily on the gospel according to St. Matthew and boasts a string of recognizable songs, led by the international hit "Day by Day."
As the cast makes it way through "Prepare Ye The Way of the Lord," "Save the People," "Learn Your Lessons Well," "Bless the Lord," "All for the Best," "All Good Gifts," "Turn Back, O Man," and "By My Side," the audience gets to see parables of Jesus Christ come humanly and heartening to life. The show also touchingly presents the story of Jesus' last moments beginning with the Last Supper.
Lead cast members include Scott Stefanowicz as Jesus; Paul Gilliland as John the Baptist/Judas, Adriana Brokus as Sonia, Dylan Lawrence as Lamar, Emily Stewart as Peggy, Kurt Yasenchak as Jeffry, Colleen Kerber as Robin, Christopher Brokus as Herb, Miranda Moyer as Joanne and Felicia Bartello as Gilmer.
Chorus and supporting cast are seniors, Rebecca Ahrensfield, Hunter Hoffman, Victoria Kramer, Joanna Miller, Jordan Pinamonti, Liz Rall, Kaitlyn Rothermel and Amie Snyder; juniors, Kayla Conetta, Julie Gusick, Neal Khanna, Kiana Motto, Katie Peeler, Nicole Shipe, Jared Shutt and Marty Williams; sophomores, Christina Jones, Lauryn Leach, Tristen Reigel, Ali Singh and Annie Stewart; freshmen, Emily Greco, Richie Gusick, Emily Padula and Emily Shovlin; and eighth Elizabeth Bednar, Jordan Collins and Riley Feese.
