Kulpmont resident first-week winner in N-I football contest

SHAMOKIN - Bill Handerhan, of 1239 Scott St., Kulpmont, captured first place in the first week of The News-Item 2010 Football Contest by correctly making nine out of 10 possible selections this week, the only entrant to do so.

For winning first place, Handerhan was awarded a $50 gift certificate, redeemable at any participating business.

Dan Smink, of 145 S. Third St., Shamokin, was one of six entrants whocorrectly picked eight out of 10 games, but the only one who correctly picked 38 points as the week's most points scored by one team. Mount Zion Baptist scored 38 points in its win over Lourdes. For finishing second, Smink will receive a $25 gift certificate.

Both Eric McCabe, of 1262 Poplar St., Kulpmont, and Charlie Muldowney, 424 E. Sixth St., Mount Carmel, also correctly picked eight out of 10 games and a top score of 42 points in their entries. By random drawing, McCabe was awarded third place and a $15 gift certificate.

Eighteen individuals correctly picked 10 out of 12 correct games and two, Rick Greco, of 38 Tall Oaks Drive, Pottsville, and Warren Gunderman, of 219 W. Second St., Mount Carmel, picked 46 points as the top score for the week. A random drawing was held, and Greco won third place, receiving a $15 gift certificate.

All three winners, Muldowney, and all those who correctly picked eight out of 10 winners will be entered into a drawing for the $200 grand prize to be awarded at the end of the season. Those who qualified this week are: Daniel Ebright, of 104 N. Grant St., Shamokin; Victor Concini, of 6 Washington Dr., Kulpmont; and Austin Fry, of 3781 State Route 61, Sunbury.

Scores from last week's games were: Missouri 23, Illinois 13; Montoursville 10, Central Columbia 0; Fresno State 28, Cincinnati 14; Jim Thorpe 18, Tamaqua 13; Mount Carmel 14, Selinsgrove 0; Schuylkill Haven 35, Tri-Valley 20; Danville 21, Shikellamy 7; Temple 31, Villanova 24; Notre Dame 23, Purdue 12; and Mount Zion Baptist 38, Lourdes 0.
