ASHLAND - A suicidal man was committed to a hospital for evaluation after an incident Wednesday morning in Ashland that closed part of a borough street.

Ashland police Chief Mark O'Hearn said officers were called at 10:11 a.m. to the 300 block of Centre Street for a report of a suicidal man and called for assistance from other agencies.

Police said telephone contact was made with the man and he was taken into custody at 10:52 a.m. without incident.

The chief said the man, who was not identified, was taken to Schuylkill Medical Center-South Jackson Street for evaluation and no other information was available.

Assisting were police from Butler Township, Mount Carmel, Mount Carmel Township, Frackville, Shenandoah, West Mahanoy Township and state police troopers from the Frackville station.

O'Hearn said Route 61, from Third to Seventh streets, was closed for about 40 minutes until the situation was resolved.

No charges have been filed at this time, O'Hearn said.
