Historical society names officers, plans activities
MOUNT CARMEL - Organized Oct. 26, the newly formed Mount Carmel Area Historical Society of Pennsylvania has elected its first officers. Those elected to serve for 2014 were David Berezovske, president; Casey McCracken, vice president; Cathy Besser, treasurer, and Philip Gergen and Ronald Shopinski, directors. The society is seeking interested people to serve as secretary and another director.
The society will have a stand at the Mount Carmel Lions Club's 17th annual street sair Saturday, May 10. Located at the Mount Carmel Area Public Library, the society will be taking orders for Deppen's Farm pies. Available will be apple, blueberry, and cherry crumb, lemon sponge, shoo fly, and no-sugar apple pies. Pies must be paid for when ordered and will be available for pick up at a later date.
The first in a series of historical coffee mugs will be on sale. The first mug will feature a color print of the former Mount Carmel Area High School, which was located at Third and Market streets.
Coupons will be available for Brewser's Sports Grille in Shamokin. By presenting the free coupon Sunday, May 25, the society will receive a donation from Brewser's of 20 percent off the purchase. Coupons are for dine-in and takeout purchases. All items at the street fair are also available at the Academy Sports Center.
The society has met monthly since being organized. The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at the chapel in the Mount Carmel Cemetery. Following the meeting, Berezovske will give a walking tour of the cemetery of Civil War soldiers buried there.
The historical society's meeting and programs are open to the public. There are no dues to belong. All area residents and former residents who have an interest in the history and culture of the Mount Carmel area are invited to join.
