Hero banners to return to Shamokin
SHAMOKIN - Citizens for a Better Community (CBC) has announced the return of its "Shamokin/Coal Township Hometown Heroes" project in 2014.
The program allows family members to honor loved ones with a 2-by-4 foot banner that includes the name and photo of the person being honored, their rank and branch of service, any foreign wars they fought in, and the name of the person or business who purchased the banner.
The program was a success in its debut in 2013 and those who purchased banners last year can have them re-hung for a reduced fee.
The cost to create a new banner and have it hung on Independence Street is $200. The deadline is Friday, April 4.
It's $50 for an existing banner to be hung this year.
The banners will be up from Memorial Day to Veterans Day. Proceeds benefit CBC and its events, such as the annual fireworks display.
CBC representative Angie Arnold said there are still a number of banners made last year that haven't been picked up by their sponsors. She asked that they either pay the $50 to have them erected again or to make arrangements to pick them up.
The organization is always looking for new fundraising ideas and new members. CBC's next meeting is 5 p.m. Sunday, April 6.
