H1N1 flu claims second life in a week at Geisinger Medical Center

share thisDANVILLE - Geisinger Medical Center has confirmed its second death cause by the H1N1 flu in seven days, according to a hospital news release.
As with the death announced last Friday, the medical center is not releasing the person's name, citing a privacy policy.
"To protect the patient's identity, and in respect of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) guidelines, we cannot discuss any additional information," the release stated.
"The Geisinger family is saddened by this second loss and our thoughts and prayers go out to the patient's family."
This death underscores the seriousness of this pandemic, according to the release.
Like seasonal flu, H1N1 flu can range from mild to severe. People who develop flu-like symptoms should contact their healthcare provider, who will determine if influenza testing or treatment is required.
Geisinger staff encourages the public to contact their primary-care providers and student health centers for vaccinations and information.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 4,000 people have died from H1N1 flu nationwide since April. Approximately 22 million have been affected by the illness.
According to the latest information from the state Department of Health, there have been 2,929 cases and 14 deaths caused by the H1N1 flu in Pennsylvania.
