Golf ball-sized hail smashes windshields, dents vehicles
DANVILLE - Hail larger than golf balls caused extensive damage to vehicles parked at the Woodbine Industrial Park and Geisinger Health System Hughes Center, about 2 miles east of Danville, Thursday afternoon.
The severe storm traveled southeast through the area around 2:30 p.m., impacting Danville, Numidia and the Ringtown Valley. Hail nearly the size of golf balls fell in the Numidia area, but did not appear to cause damage.
That was not the case near Danville. At Woodbine and the Hughes Center, nearly every vehicle, dozens of them, had dents and at least one smashed window. Several vehicles required towing because of the damage.
Geisinger issued a statement saying the hail caused minor damage to Geisinger Medical Center and two Life Flight helicopters. It said Geisinger’s security team was assessing the damage.
The National Weather Service (NWS) office in State College at 2:35 p.m. had issued a tornado warning for Columbia and Montour counties and east-central Northumberland County; however, there were no reports of significant wind damage or tornado sightings.
