Girl finds stolen cremation ashes in W. Pa. park
CLAIRTON, Pa. (AP) — A little girl has found the ashes of a man cremated in June, hours after they were stolen from a van belonging to the dead man's surviving son in a crime-ridden Pittsburgh suburb.
Police in Clairton on Tuesday were still investigating the theft of the ashes, which were recovered in a park about 10 p.m. Monday.
Robert Smith says his father, Richard J. Smith, died in June at age 75. Since then, Smith has kept the bag of ashes in a memorial box in the center console of his van.
Smith discovered the ashes missing shortly before 3 p.m. Monday. He suspects the ashes were taken by someone who mistook them for powdery drugs like heroin or cocaine saying, "You know this is a high drug area ... it's sad."
