Editor's note: This weekly update on the H1N1 virus is provided by Dr. Lisa Esolen, director of infection control for Geisinger Health System.

DANVILLE - Both Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center continue to see decreases in flu cases; however, following preventive measures remains important, especially with the Thanksgiving holiday just days away.

The following tips can help everyone stay healthy through the holidays and for the remainder of the flu season.

Follow these simple guidelines to protect against seasonal and H1N1 flu:

Wash your hands.

Don't touch your face; cold and flu viruses enter the body through the eyes, nose or mouth.

Drink plenty of fluids.

Get fresh air. Central heating dries can dry out the nose and throat, making a person more vulnerable to cold and flu.

Exercise regularly.

Don't smoke.

Cut alcohol consumption.

Eat a balanced diet, including foods rich in zinc and vitamin C to keep immune system strong.

Avoid crowds.
