Looking from the back of a home on Chestnut Street, flames can be seen shooting out of a home on West Wood Street.

COAL TOWNSHIP - Firefighters are at the scene of a house fire at a double-home in the 1700 block of West Wood Street within site of Kemp Memorial Stadium and the Shamokin Area High School campus.

Firefighters, first dispatched about 1:30 p.m. Monday, were having trouble containing the blaze and at 2:20 p.m. were ordered out of the building.

They're now working with hoses from outside the house and with a cannon truck, which was trained at the third floor of the home.

Nathan Rhodes, a Shamokin police officer who happened to be leaving the high school, saw a column of smoke coming from the house and responded to the scene. He spoke to a neighbor, who wasn't sure if anyone was home, then went to the house and kicked in the door. He was able to get a dog out, and it's not believed that anyone was home.

Two firefighters were seen slipping on steps leading into the home as ice was building up in the cold temperatures.

Weather.com was reporting the temperature as 12 degrees at about the time the fire broke out.
