COAL TOWNSHIP - An 18-year-old female cadet at Northwestern Academy has been charged by Coal Township police with breaking the nose of an academy employee, hitting another worker and spitting on a third staff member last month.
Jah-Tavia Evans, of East Stroudsburg, was arraigned at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III on two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment and one count of aggravated assault by a prisoner. She was committed to Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury in lieu of $20,000 bail.
According to a criminal complaint filed by Coal Township Patrolman Matthew Hashuga, Evans is accused of punching staff member Rinatta Knittle several times in the face, causing her to suffer a broken nose.
Evans also allegedly punched academy employee Jessica Coffey in the head several times, causing injury, and spit in the face of staff member Amy Johns.
Knittle, Coffey and Johns all sought medical attention at Shamokin Area Community Hospital.
Police said the assault occurred between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. Jan. 10 in Cottage B in the Building Bridges section of the academy. Police said Evans became aggressive toward Knittle when she would not let her enter the cottage. After punching Knittle in the face several times, police said Evans struck Coffey in the head and spit on Johns as both employees attempted to assist Knittle and secure the defendant.
