Felled tree rips down power line, starts blaze near Paxinos
PAXINOS - About 1,300 PPL customers were without electric service 5 1/2 hours Saturday after a downed tree struck a power line, igniting a brush fire.
The accident occurred about 2:15 p.m. High winds are believed to have felled the tree. It struck a power line along Route 61 near the Route 61/487 intersection, sparking a blaze that charred about a half-acre on the hillside above a curve in the southbound lanes.
Firefighters from Elysburg, Stonington and Upper Augusta Township responded, blocking the northbound and southbound lanes as they worked to extinguish the fire. They remained on scene until shortly after 4 p.m. A PPL crew remained even longer, with power restored to all customers about 7:45 p.m.
