Hello neighbors. September brings cooler nights, chirping crickets and a hint of color on the leaves. Summer vacations may be over, but that doesn't mean road trips can't be enjoyed by those wishing to discover the local treasures at every turn of the road, trail or river bend.

Fall festivals and heritage celebrations abound this fall. Here are just some of the events happening in September: Milton hosts its event-filled, annual Harvest Festival Sept. 10 to 19. Ard's Farm Market hosts a fall celebration and its corn maze every weekend from Sept. 25 through Oct. 30. Selinsgrove's popular Market Street Festival will be held Sept. 25. Beaver Community Fair (and its new food item: deep-fried corn on the cob) will be held Sept. 19 through 25 and don't forget about the Bloomsburg Fair Sept. 25 through Oct. 2.

Early October festivals include Mifflinburg's Oktoberfest Oct. 1 and 2, the increasingly-popular Warrior Run-Fort Freeland Heritage Days Oct. 2 and 3 just north of McEwensville, Shamokin's Fall Fun Festival Oct. 2, the Fall Festival at American Heritage Crafters in Milton on Oct. 8 and 9 and Buffalo Valley Antique Machinery Association's Fall Show Oct. 8 through 10 in Lewisburg.

Music lovers can continue to enjoy live music in Cameron Park in Sunbury through Sept. 27 and music on the terrace at Front Street Station Sept. 3 and 4. Bluegrass lovers will enjoy the Bluegrass by the River music festival in Montgomery Sept. 12, while jazz lovers will enjoy the John Pizzarelli Quartet Sept. 29 and the Mimi Fox Trio Oct. 6 at Bucknell University.

Farmers markets

Food lovers can still enjoy local farmers markets throughout the month. Take a leisurely cruise up the Susquehanna and enjoy one of the Hiawatha's themed dinner or brunch cruises, or enjoy the food and view with Sunday brunch at the Shikellamy Marina Sept. 5. Cherry Alley Café continues its delectable Dinners Around the World series Fridays and Saturdays. And don't forget to check out the dining section of our website for menus.

Outdoor fun

For the competitive athletes out there, September offers the Milton Harvest Festival's bike race Sept. 11, guided canoe and kayak trip on the 12th and 5K run on Sept. 18. And if you want to test the water, so to speak, you may want to enjoy the Canoe Susquehanna's guided kayak trips Sept. 4 and 19 or Oct. 2.

My space is limited here, but there is much more to do this month, so be sure to visit the Calendar of Events at VisitCentralPA.org to find out more about Country Farm and Home's "Fallidays" and Christmas Fest, the gardening series plus upcoming wedding expo at the Country Cupboard, Rail Days on the Tioga Central Railroad, Dracula at the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, choreographer Twyla Tharp at Bucknell University, gallery exhibits at Bucknell and Susquehanna universities, a dog pool party at Lewisburg's pool, ghosts and goblins at Lincoln Caverns, Campus Theatres' documentary film festival; the annual Bucky Bash in Watsontown, and much more.

The fun never ends in the Susquehanna River Valley. Visit our website to download our fall festivities brochure and fall foliage driving tours flyer and to sign-up for our weekly email "This Week in the Susquehanna River Valley." Have a great September!
