Fall festival, boot sale set for Saturday in Shamokin
SHAMOKIN - Plans are set for the fourth annual Fall Fun Festival and Car Boot sale in downtown Shamokin Saturday.
"Our vendors are ready and we hope people will stop by for bargains and to have some fun in the city," said Jeanne Shaffer, executive director of the Northumberland County Council for the Arts and Humanities, festival sponsor.
All events will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the 00 block of West Independence Street and in the municipal parking lot next to The Fun Shop.
A car boot sale is an opportunity for the public to sell items out of the trunk, or "boot" as they say in British terms, of their vehicles. Spaces for the sale are as large as the parking space and a tent and table are allowed if they fit in the space.
"We have the entire block of parking spaces filled with people selling from their trunks," Shaffer said. "I'm very pleased with the turnout."
At the municipal parking lot, there will be free activities for children, including pumpkin painting, face painting, a haystack hunt for toys and candy, and free balloons from Susquehanna Bank.
A number of community vendors will be in the parking lot selling a variety of items and food.
"We will have homemade purses, seasonal glitter, temporary tattoo stands, nail art, the popular Scentsy products and art available for sale," Shaffer said. "As far as food goes, the Shamokin Rotary Club will be serving breakfast and other items, while the Rescue Fire Company will be holding a chicken barbecue at the rear of the parking lot."
One vendor will have homemade apple dumplings, pulled pork sandwiches, harvest treats, caramel corn and caramel apples.
In addition, haluski, stuffed cabbage, ham pot pie, baked goods and other food items will be available.
"It's all about getting people into the community and showing them a good time, so we want to see everyone there," she said.
