Driver's condition improves
DANVILLE - The Canadian driver who survived a horrific tractor-trailer accident on Route 147 in Point Township Thursday was listed in fair condition Friday by a nursing supervisor at Geisinger Medical Center.
Raveendranathan Nalliah, 55, of North York, Ontario, escaped the early morning crash with a couple scratches and a broken leg, according to Point Township Police Chief Joshua VanKirk.
Township police responded to the accident at 4:25 a.m. near 14th Street.
Nalliah was traveling south when police say he fell asleep at the wheel and struck a utility pole and a large oak tree. The force of the collision knocked over the tree. The truck continued up the trunk and came to rest amid the brush on top of the downed tree.
It took rescue personnel two hours to remove him from the wreckage and 11 hours to fully reopen the road.
Nalliah was hauling jugs of bleach, some of which spilled and required cleanup by Northridge Group Inc., of Northumberland, an environmental remediation firm.
