ATV riders charged
SHAMOKIN - Two male juvenile all-terrain vehicle (ATV) operators have been charged with multiple offenses by Patrolman Scott Weaver involving a chase on Aug. 18 in the east end of the city.
A 15-year-old Shamokin boy, whose ATV struck Weaver's leg during the incident that began shortly after 12:30 a.m., is charged with four counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault of a police officer, three counts of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, fleeing or eluding police, hit and run, trespass by motor vehicle, driving an ATV without a license and driving an ATV on a city street.
A 17-year-old Coal Township male also is charged with two counts of aggravated assault, one count of aggravated assault of a police officer, two counts of simple assault, recklessly endangering, fleeing or eluding police, trespass by motor vehicle, speeding, driving an ATV without a license, driving an ATV on a city street, reckless driving and a stop sign violation.
According to a police report, Weaver spotted two ATV riders near the railroad tracks at Pearl and Chestnut streets. After spotting the police cruiser, the two juvenile operators fled north on Pearl Street before traveling onto Strawberry, Webster, Cherry and Hemlock streets, with Weaver in pursuit with his emergency lights activated.
Police said the ATV riders traveled through a stop sign at Race and Cherry streets at a high rate of speed before reaching a dead end on Hemlock Street. Weaver said both ATV operators began to turn around when he pulled his police car into the area. At this point, Weaver said a blue ATV operated by the 17-year-old Coal Township male then headed straight toward him before swerving at the last moment into a neighbor's yard, where it ran over a metal ladder. The ATV operator, who lost control of his vehicle momentarily, then fled the scene.
The 15-year-old ATV rider came around to the left of the police car and struck Weaver's leg.
During the course of the investigation, police were able to identify both ATV operators and subsequently filed the charges.
Police said the 17-year-old male, who was interviewed in the presence of his grandmother, denied being involved in the incident.
