SHAMOKIN DAM - One man is in Snyder County Prison and his alleged accomplice still on the run after police said the two tried to steal an ATM from a Monroe Township bank early Wednesday.
State police at Selinsgrove said an alarm at the Northumberland National Bank branch at 87 Lori Lane was activated at 2:45 a.m. When officers arrived, they said they observed Jorge Hernandez Vasquez, 26, no address listed, and a second person at the drive-in; the ATM had been torn from the building.
Vasquez and the other individual fled, and troopers were able to apprehend Vasquez, who initially resisted arrest and had to be electronically immobilized four times before being taken into custody, according to police.
The two men had used a stolen 2000 Ford F-150 to pull the machine from the building wall, using chains and hooks.
The vehicle is owned by Michael L. Deivert, 39, of North Seventh Street, Sunbury. Deivert was contacted and told police he had parked the pickup earlier in the evening and did not know it was stolen. He said the vehicle was unlocked and the keys were in it.
No money was taken in the theft, but damage to the ATM and building is estimated at $30,000. Vasquez was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Willis Savidge, of Middleburg, and charged with theft by unlawful taking, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest. He was jailed in lieu of $150,000 bail.
The investigation continues as police search for the second actor. Anyone with information is asked to call 374-8145.
