Woman injured

ELDRED TOWNSHIP - Darice A. Wehry, 58, of Klingerstown, suffered serious injuries Monday morning when a car she was driving east on Ridge Road struck a tree branch that crashed through her windshield and hit her in the face.

After being hit with the tree branch, Wehry was able to bring her vehicle to a stop in the eastbound lane, facing southeast. The accident occurred at 5:36 a.m.

Wehry was transported by ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where she was listed Tuesday in critical condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Because they were not able to interview Wehry at the scene due to the severity of her injuries, state police at Schuylkill Haven were unable to determine if the tree branch was lying on the road or fell off a tree during high winds and a driving rain.

Route 901 accident

EXCELSIOR - Karen Zombro, 44, of 260 Race St., Sunbury, suffered facial lacerations in a two-vehicle accident late Sunday night on Route 901, approximately one-half mile west of this Coal Township village.

Coal Township police reported Zombro was driving a 1999 Pontiac Sunfire west at 10:40 p.m. when she observed a 1997 Honda CRV driven by James Whitecavage, 27, of 389 W. Main St., Girardville, approaching from the opposite direction. Police said Whitecavage's vehicle was partially in Zombro's lane of travel, causing Zombro to steer to the right and go partially off the road in an attempt to avoid a collision. Police said Whitecavage also steered to the right to avoid a near head-on collision, but as the vehicles were passing each other, the driver's side mirrors on both vehicles struck each other, causing damage to the mirrors.

Both vehicles were driven from the scene.

Zombro was transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Shamokin Area Community Hospital, where she underwent emergency room treatment before being released. Whitecavage escaped injury.

Police said Whitecavage will be cited for failing to travel on the right side of the road.

Assisting police at the scene were Coal Township fire personnel, Coal Township Rescue Squad and township fire police.

Both lanes of the highway were shut down to traffic in both directions for approximately 45 minutes.
