COAL TOWNSHIP - An increased drug presence in the local communities prompted a canine search at Shamokin Area High School Friday.

However, drug dogs didn't identify any narcotic odors, according to a letter sent to district parents by high school Principal Chris Venna. No drugs were found within the building, Venna wrote.

According to Venna, the administration felt the search was necessary as a result of an uptick in drug activity in the area.

"We regret having to take this action," Venna wrote. "However, we are serious about keeping drugs and alcohol out of the buildings, and are willing to use all legal procedures within our authority to ensure that our school is safe and drug-free."

Special officers from the Pennsylvania State Police Canine Unit assisted the Shamokin Area administration in the building-wide locker search. Coal Township Police also assisted in the search, which was conducted in accordance with school district policy, Venna wrote.

If parents have any questions or concerns, they can contact Venna at 648-5731
