n SHAMOKIN - Jeffrey D. Burns, 45, of 8 W. Sunbury St., Shamokin, pleaded guilty Tuesday to harassment and was ordered by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III to pay a $50 fine plus costs.

An additional charge of simple assault was withdrawn.

Burns was charged by Patrolman Mark Costa with shoving his live-in girlfriend, Carrie Miller, causing her to fall and suffer injuries to her back and head. Police said the incident occurred Feb. 17 at their residence.

n SHAMOKIN - Jah-Tavia Evans, 18, of East Stroudsburg, waived to court Tuesday two counts each of aggravated assault, simple assault and harassment, and one count of harassment by a prisoner.

The charges were filed by Coal Township Patrolman Matthew Hashuga in connection with a Jan. 10 disturbance in the Building Bridges section of Northwestern Academy.

Evans, a student at the academy, is accused of punching staff member Rinatta Knittle in the face several times, causing her to suffer a broken nose. Evans also is charged with punching staff member Jessica Coffey in the head several times and spitting in the face of staff member Amy Johns.

Evans was ordered by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III to appear for arraignment March 29 at Northumberland County Prison, Sunbury, at which time she can plead guilty or no-contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.

n SHAMOKIN - Preston F. Ganunis, 26, of Hegins, waived to court Tuesday two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of careless driving relating to a Nov. 14 incident at Market and Independence streets.

Shamokin Chief of Police Edward Griffiths, who was a corporal at the time, filed the charges.

Ganunis was ordered by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III to appear for arraignment March 29 at Northumberland County Courthouse, Sunbury, at which time he can plead guilty or no-contest, or seek a trial by pleading not guilty.
