SUNBURY - Plans are progressing toward bringing a recreational, off-highway vehicle park to the area, covering as many as 6,000 acres stretching from Mount Carmel Township to Zerbe Township.
Now that municipal leaders have passed resolutions in support of a feasibility study for the park, county officials plan to go full steam ahead in making sure the project becomes a reality.
"We are eager to get the project started," Northumberland County Commissioner Kurt Masser, who is spearheading the county project with the planning department, said last week. "We anticipate
receiving more state funding for the park."
The park would involve hiking, biking, all-terrain vehicles, horseback riding, wildlife habitat and comfort facilities and cover sections of Coal, Mount Carmel, East Cameron, West Cameron and Zerbe townships.
"All the municipal leaders have given their support for the park and we are currently evaluating proposals for a master plan," he said.
The county received a $200,000 grant from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources in mid January to conduct a feasibility study. He said the park will be similar to a state park with trails for an assortment of interests, and believes it could spark tourism and attract industry to the county.
