County historical society to host free program about Civil War soldiers

SUNBURY - Dr. Richard A. Sauers, local resident and nationally known Civil War historian, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday at a meeting of the Northumberland County Historical Society to be held at the Hunter House, 1150 N. Front St. His program will focus on Northumberland County soldiers in the Civil War.

Sauers has written more than two dozen books, including the "Gettysburg Campaign" bibliography in 1982, "A Caspian Sea of Ink: The Meade-Sickles Controversy" in 1989, the highly acclaimed two-volume "Advance the Colors! Pennsylvania Civil War Battle Flags" in 1987 and 1991, "Meade: Victor of Gettysburg" in 2004 and "William F. Bartlett: Biography of a Union Civil War General" in 2009. Sauers has also written 19 journal articles, 120 encyclopedia articles and reviewed more than 325 books.

A native of Lewisburg, he earned a bachelor of arts degree in history from Susquehanna University, and both his master's degree and doctorate in history from Pennsylvania State University. He serves as the executive director of the Packwood House Museum in Lewisburg.

The program, open to the public, is free of charge. A reception will follow Sauers' presentation.
