Coal township recycling center making a profit
by justin strawser
COAL TOWNSHIP - So far this year, the Coal Township Recycling Center hasn't used taxpayer money to operate the facility on Venn Access Road.
In fact, according to Coal Township Commissioner Craig Fetterman at the monthly meeting Thursday night, the recycling center has been in the black by $1,868 since January.
Last month, the township collected 127,826 pounds of material at a figure of $11,349.97 and a profit of $1,676.
"That's 127,826 pounds that won't be in a land fill or be on someone's garbage bill," said Fetterman.
If the township could pull in similar numbers on a regular basis, the facility would consistently be self-sufficient and become a revenue source to help with funding without using taxes, explained Commissioner Gene Welsh.
"It's a win-win," said Fetterman.
