City fire chief reminds citizens to check auto-dialing service
SHAMOKIN - City Fire Chief Robert Wolfe is reminding citizens with fire and burglar alarms to check the phone number for their auto-dialing service.
If it doesn't have the 570 area code programmed, it won't reach the county communication center's non-emergency line at 570-988-4539.
"They need to check with their provider (or do so themselves) to make sure that's done or if something happens, it's not going to dial," Wolfe said.
The 570 area code switched to 10-digit dialing in September. Without punching in the area code, callers are redirected to an automated message to try their phone call again.
There was a small fire inside a Raspberry Hill residence Friday afternoon. The auto-dial wasn't updated so the tenant called 911 themselves, Wolfe said.
The system at the housing complex will be updated Monday by a service technician, he said, and the incident brought the issue to light.
Auto-dialing services are not programmed to dial 911 in the event of a glitch, Wolfe said. That's why they're linked to non-emergency phone numbers.
