COAL TOWNSHIP - A car wash will be held Saturday to help a family who had to bury two loved ones within the span of a few days earlier this year.

Funds raised from the Payne Memorial Car Wash, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Autozone, Route 61, will help defray funeral costs for Devin Payne, who passed away at age 1 on Feb. 15, and his father, David Lee "Jimmy" Payne, who passed away four days later. He was 26.

"It has been rough the past few months, but we are pushing on," said Jimmy Payne's mother, Donna Haley.

The day after his son's sudden passing, Jimmy Payne went into cardiac arrest "due to the stress of the situation," Haley said. He was taken by ambulance to Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital and was flown to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he suffered two more cardiac arrests and never regained consciousness. He died Feb. 19.

Light-hearted fun

Haley said organizers, while using the title "memorial car wash," want to make it a light-hearted event.

"We will have girls washing the cars in bikinis, just so everyone can have some fun with it all," she said.

That's how her son would have preferred it.

"Jimmy was definitely a character," she said. "He was always cracking jokes and being funny."

Cost of Saturday's event is $5 for cars and motorcycles and $10 for trucks.
