C.T. native runs ultra marathon in South Africa
COAL TOWNSHIP - Josette Savidge, a graduate of Shamokin Area High School and the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, recently traveled to Durban, South Africa, where she participated in the Comrades Marathon, an ultra marathon with 18,000 participants from 60 countries.
Savidge completed the 56.1-mile race in 11 hours, 44 minutes and one second. She said the temperature was in the high 80s and called the terrian "unbelievable."
Savidge has completed 14 half marathons and marathons through the United States and was working toward completing 12 marathons in 12 states in 2014 before suffering an injury.
She recovered from the injury and participated in the ultra marathon in South Africa.
The Comrades Marathon was first held May 24, 1921, in Pietermaritzburg with 34 runners and has continued each year except 1941 through 1945 during World War II.
Savidge is a resident of Columbia, Mo., and a daughter of Joseph and Edwina Savidge, of Coal Township.
