The Milwaukee Chapter of the Association for Facilities Engineering (AFE) has named 1977 Mount Carmel Area High School graduate Mike Fegley as its 2008 Engineer of the Year.
The award recognizes "outstanding service and commitment to both the AFE organization and the facility engineering profession."
Fegley is corporate facilities and energy manager for Quad/Graphics, Sussex, Wis., the world's largest privately held printer company, providing commercial printing and print management for magazines, catalogs and direct mail products.
"His job is making sure our network of plants and other locations have adequate energy supplies and that they're operating as efficiently as possible," the company said in announcing the award.
Since 2000, Fegley and his team have helped the company decrease energy consumption by 21 percent relative to production, which has saved more than $19 million.
"I appreciate the personal recognition but also realize that most of what we do as engineers is a team effort," Fegley said.
Fegley has been involved with the AFE as well as the Wisconsin Chapter of the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) because the professional organizations enable him to keep current on engineering and energy matters through educational opportunities and networking events.
A member of the AFE since 1991, he has served on the Milwaukee Chapter's board and spent a term (2006-2007) as its president. He's also been certified on a national level as a certified plant engineer through the AFE and a certified energy engineer through AEE.
The AFE presented Fegley with his award at the organization's most recent gathering on Aug. 19.
Fegley earned an architectural building construction engineering technology degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering in 1981. He joined Quad/Graphics as a facility engineer in 1984.
