DANVILLE - Dr. Douglas Kupas, emergency physician and associate chief academic officer, Geisinger Medical Center, was recently awarded the Keith Neely Outstanding Contribution to Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Award by the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP). The award is given annually to an active or past NAEMSP member who has provided significant leadership to the organization.

Kupas has served in multiple NAEMSP leadership positions, including chairman of the Rural Affairs Committee, chairman of the Standards and Practices Committee, member of the board of directors and co-principal investigator on an NAEMSP grant.

"I am proud to be a part of NAEMSP, and it is a tremendous honor to have the opportunity to work with EMS physicians and professionals from across the country to foster excellence in the prehospital patient care provided by EMS personnel and systems," Kupas said.

Kupas, an EMT/paramedic since 1980, is also the Commonwealth EMS Medical Director for Pennsylvania, and he serves on the editorial board of the Journal for Pre-hospital Emergency Care and as the medical director for Danville Ambulance.

His research has focused on pre-hospital airway management and ambulance vehicle safety.

Kupas speaks nationally on issues of EMS patient and provider safety and issues related to rural EMS systems.
