SHAMOKIN - Downtown Medical Center, 239 W. Commerce St., has been in operation for 24 years at the same location.

During that time, the center has been providing affordable, high-quality, personalized medical care to area residents. New patients are being accepted in every field of medicine, by appointment only.

Downtown Medical Center is fully equipped to perform various diagnostic procedures, including laboratory testing, ultrasound, pulmonary function testing, Holter monitor and stress testing.

Echocardiograms, now performed at Downtown Medical, feature color-flow imaging, a technology that has broadened the center's horizons when it comes to management of cardiovascular disease.

Downtown Medical Center has added brand-new laboratory equipment - cardiac ultrasound and vascular Doppler machines - all state-of-the-art technology.

Downtown Medical is currently performing diagnostic vascular studies including carotid scans, abdominal aorta scans for aneurysm and non-invasive testing to diagnose peripheral vascular disease. The facility's staff has the ability to diagnose blood clots of the venous system and evaluation of leg swelling for venous incompetence.

Patients may now call to schedule these vascular procedures. The center continues to offer bone-density testing, which aids in the early detection and treatment of osteoporosis.

Most insurance covers the cost of bone-density testing, and a report can be sent to a family physician.

Downtown Medical Center is in the process of opening a Preventative Cardiology Clinic within the next four to six weeks. The clinic will entail lipid management, hypertension evaluation and management, diabetes evaluation and management, smoking cessation and lifestyle modification including weight reduction.

This is an unmet need in our area. Statistics show that 80 percent of cardiovascular events can be prevented by multi-risk intervention.

National health statistics show that greater than 70 percent of patients are not achieving their goal for blood pressure levels, lipid levels, weight and blood sugar levels.

Dr. Sudhir Khanna, owner and operator of Downtown Medical Center, specializes in internal medicine, cardiopulmonary diseases and geriatrics. He has board certifications in internal medicine, geriatric medicine and advanced achievement in internal medicine, and he is a member of the Fellowship of American College of Physicians.

In August 2005, Khanna received the designation of specialist in clinical hypertension by the American Society of Hypertensions Inc. (ASH). The ASH Specialists Program was formed by ASH in 1998 in response to the growing recognition that the hypertension problem requires the coordinated effort of frontline health-care providers and those physicians with documented expertise in managing hypertension.

These physicians can act as local and regional consultants for the more complex and difficult cases, and can also assist in advice regarding guidelines and process improvement. To date, designation has been granted to 1,115 physicians practicing in the U.S., Canada and other countries.

In December 2005, Khanna was certified diplomate status with American Board of Clinical Lipidology, one of only 150 physicians from across the nation to achieve this important credential.

The medical center is also associated with Drexel University's Program for Medical

Education, and is a continuing site for internships with the physician assistant program at Drexel University and Bloomsburg Hospital Nursing Practitioner Program. Khanna was named educator of the year in 2004.

In 2006, Khanna was awarded the title of diplomate of vascular medicine. Khanna continues to accept new patients by appointment only.

Khanna is a participating provider for traditional Medicare, Medicaid and Capital Blue Cross CAIC. He is also a preferred provider for Pennsylvania Blue Shield. He is a member of the Geisinger Health Plan Physician Network, Keystone Health Plan, Health America, Secure Horizons, Humana, Advantra Freedom and Aetna.

Downtown Medical Center is able to provide medical care at primary, secondary and tertiary levels through various trained specialists, and also provides continuing support and usage of Shamokin Area Community Hospitals for in-patients.

Khanna is extremely proud and pleased to offer highly competent, compassionate, affordable, state-of-the-art health care in the Shamokin-Coal Township area and neighboring communities.
