Applications open for Group Cares participation
SHAMOKIN - The application period is now open for area homeowners seeking free home repairs to be made during a July 20 to 26 work camp to be held by Group Cares.
Group Cares, a faith-based firm that organizes Christian missions nationwide, brought 329 volunteers to the area this past July. Repairs were made to 34 homes including the installation of a wheelchair ramp, replacing or constructing porches and numerous painting projects.
The group calculated it had a combined financial impact of $253,860.86 on the Shamokin and Coal Township areas, and 1,250 nonperishable food items were donated to Manna for the Many.
Applications were reviewed based on income but also on need. The elderly, the poor and the disabled had been encouraged to apply.
Both labor and materials are free to qualifying households.
The program is open to anyone within a 30-minute drive of Shamokin Area Middle/High School, where the volunteers make camp for the week.
Workcamps are intensive one-week trips that help people grow in Christian faith through service. Visit Central Susquehanna Opportunities Inc., 2 E. Arch St., Shamokin, or call 570-644-6575 for more information.
