Alumnus Jacob Frasch to perform at MCA symphonic band concert

MOUNT CARMEL - The Mount Carmel Area Symphonic Band will present its annual spring concert at 7 p.m. Saturday in the junior-senior high school auditorium. The concert will feature as guest soloist Jacob Frasch, Mount Carmel Area alumnus and pianist.

The symphonic band will perform a wide variety of music, including the famous "Florentiner March," Robert Sheldon's "Appalachian Legacy," "Big Band Spectacular" and others. Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) All-State Band member Shaine Lepley, a senior, will perform Rimsky-Korsakov's "Concerto for Trombone," accompanied by senior and Carissa Pupo, PMEA All-State Chorus member. The program will then feature Frasch, who will perform the classic "Rhapsody In Blue" by George Gershwin.

Frasch, a native of Kulpmont, and a 2001 graduate of Mount Carmel Area. While a student in the district, Frasch studied piano first with Frances Gaugler of Elysburg and later with Galen Deibler of Susquehanna University. While at MCA, he also achieved the honor of performing in the All-State Band on French horn. He later attended the Oberlin Conservatory in Oberlin, Ohio, where he received a bachelor's degree in piano performance. Frasch then moved on to the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., where he earned his master's degree, and is currently completing his doctorate. He is on the faculty of the International School of Music near Washington, D.C.

Frasch has concertized extensively throughout the United States as both a soloist and a chamber musician, including performances in Maine, California, Arizona, Texas, the Carolinas, Maryland and New York City. Additionally, he has been featured on the New York Times website, NPR's "Morning Edition," and at the U.S. Department of State in Washington. He returns regularly to the area to perform free recitals at St. John's Lutheran Church in Snydertown.

The MCA Symphonic Band is under the direction of Bernard Stellar. Tickets can be purchased by calling the high school band room at 339-1500, extension 3139, from any band member or band parent, or at the door the night of the show.
