All four area districts operating on expired contracts
All four teacher unions in the school districts in The News-Item's coverage area are operating on expired contracts. In addition to what's reported in the accompanying stories on Mount Carmel Area and Line Mountain, here's the status for Shamokin Area and Southern Columbia:
- Shamokin Area's most recent teacher contract expired June 30 after a two-year extension to a five-year contract.
School board director Charles Shuey, who chairs the personnel committee and is on the negotiation committee, said it's still early in the process.
"No one has made any kind of threat," he said when asked about the possibility of labor action. "We're optimistic that something can be worked out over time."
No offers have been officially rejected yet, Shuey said.
- Southern Columbia Area teachers have been working on a three-year contract that expired June 30, and board Vice President Charlie Porter, who chairs the negotiations and personnel committee, said Monday the process has been "amicable." "We're working toward a solution," he said.
Nothing has lead Porter to believe the teachers will picket or take any action such as what has occurred at Mount Carmel Area and Line Mountain.
