PHILADELPHIA - Alexandra E. Sacavage, of Mount Carmel, was honored as a Philadelphia Rising Star at a ceremony held March 3 at the mayor's reception room in city hall.

Sacavage, a recent graduate of Villanova University School of Law, is employed as an attorney at the law firm of Zarwin, Baum, DeVito, Kaplan, Schaer and Toddy, P.C. in Philadelphia.

She is a daughter of Northumberland County President Judge Robert Sacavage and Frances Sacavage.

The program was developed several years ago by Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown to recognize each year during March, designated nationally as "Women's History Month," a dozen young women who have demonstrated by their achievements that they are on track to be future leaders of Philadelphia.

Brown has held office since 2000, and is renowned for legislative achievements benefiting women and children's programs. Notably, she has established the "Fund for Children," which is supported by a financial commitment from the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles sports organizations.

Brown introduced the awardees as "outstanding models of professional women who have the courage to lead and the drive to make things happen." The honorees represented a variety of professions including education, the news media, government service, the sciences, and law.

Sandra Dungee Glenn, president and CEO of the American Cities Foundation acted as keynote speaker. Dungee-Glenn introduced Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, a longtime advocate of programs benefiting women and children, who congratulated the awardees.

Also addressing the guests and participants was Gale Given, president of Verizon Pennsylvania, one of the financial supporters of the Rising Star's recognition program.
