Academy hosts firefighters, vets for open house
HERNDON - About 75 people attended the third annual Salute to Veterans, Firefighters and Emergency Personnel Saturday at the St. Louis de Montfort Academy along Herndon Road in Jackson Township.
The academy, which also invites neighbors to the open house each year, serves a meal of chicken barbecue, hot dogs and other picnic food. The guests of honor are recognized and the student band performs.
With Saturday's chilly wind, the event was moved inside the academy gym, an old barn on the property a few miles outside of Herndon. St. Louis de Montfort's three-story school and dormitory was a nursing home years ago.
Members of Herndon Fire Company, who brought their pumper truck to the event, were among those saluted.
The school is operated by the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property. Students travel to the monastery in Elysburg for Mass.
