85-year-old pedestrian hit by car
SHAMOKIN - An 85-year-old Mount Carmel man suffered what appeared to be a serious leg injury after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing Lincoln Street on Wednesday.
Ronald Evans was crossing near Eighth Street at 7:05 p.m. to attend Bible study at First Baptist Church, 10 E. Lincoln St., when he was struck on his right side by a Chevrolet Aveo driven by Kenneth Smink, 74, of Coal Township.
Evans was moving slowly as he crossed Lincoln Street, dressed in dark clothing and walking with a cane, according to a witness. Night was setting in at the time, and the area was dimly lit.
Smink had been stopped at a stop sign at Eighth and Lincoln and was driving slowly. The driver-side head lamp was out prior to the accident. He said he simply didn't see Evans crossing the street and was very shaken up himself.
Evans' right ankle was badly injured and was bleeding. He was conscious as bystanders watched over him ahead of the arrival of AREA Services ambulance personnel. He was taken to Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, for treatment.
