8 MCA teams head to Odyssey of the Mind
MOUNT CARMEL - Eight teams of students from Mount Carmel Area will participate in this weekend's Odyssey of the Mind competition at Berwick Area High School.
There are five teams from the high school and three teams from the elementary school.
Last year was the third consecutive year that Mount Carmel Area sent a team to the World Finals.
The 2013 regional competition will be held Saturday and will host up to 100 teams from Northeastern Pennsylvania. Teams that place in the top two of their division advance to the state competition at Pocono Mountain West High School.
Odyssey of the Mind is a competition involving one long-term and one spontaneous component. Spontaneous is given at the competition and determines how well a team can find a creative solution by working together in a short period of time. The long-term problem is given months in advance and teams must solve the problem in an eight-minute rehearsed skit and under a tight budget.
The 2013 long-term problems range from building delivery vehicles to designing balsa wood structures that roll. Mount Carmel Area teams have been working hard to perfect their vehicles, balsa wood structures, skits, and costumes and are ready to present at the regional level.
