ATLAS - A school bus transporting young adults was seen traveling from Atlas to Mount Carmel on Thursday morning. But instead of heading to classes, they were en route to the magisterial district judge's office for arraignment on multiple drug offenses.

A total of 43 individuals were charged Thursday by members of the Northumberland-Montour Drug Task Force in one of the largest drug busts conducted in the Mount Carmel area. Confiscated in the raid, which began at 7 a.m. and culminated at approximately 2:30 p.m., were marijuana, cocaine, heroin, an assortment of prescription pills valued at several hundred dollars, a couple hundred dollars in cash and drug paraphernalia.

The bust was the result of a seven-month investigation spearheaded by Mount Carmel Sgt. Todd Owens, Mount Carmel Patrolman Matt Dillman and Mount Carmel Township Patrolman David Stamets Jr. Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush, Mount Carmel Police Chief Brian Shurock and Kulpmont Chief of Police Richard Wilson supervised the probe in cooperation with the Northumberland County District Attorney's Office.

The vast majority of the defendants are street-level dealers and repeat offenders. Most of the suspects are in their 20s and from the Mount Carmel area. They were rounded up at their homes by approximately 30 members of the drug task force or transported to their arraignments from Northumberland County Prison in Sunbury, where they were already serving time on unrelated offenses.

As of Thursday afternoon, 26 of the defendants had been taken into custody. Five of the suspects will be charged through summons, while arrest warrants are pending against the remaining defendants.

Among the defendants are 16-year-old and 17-year-old males from Shamokin, and Megen E. Allan, 27, of 245 S. Shamokin St., Shamokin, who fled from police in Kulpmont as they attempted to take her into custody at about 9 a.m. Allan handed herself over to authorities about two hours later in the parking lot of Turkey Hill Minit Market at Fifth and Market streets, Mount Carmel, which is located across the street from the office of Magisterial District Judge Hugh Jones.

A Mount Carmel Area School District bus was used to transport approximately 25 of the defendants to Jones' office for their arraignments. Most of the defendants were unable to post bail and were either committed or recommitted to the county jail.

During a 1 p.m. press conference at Mount Carmel Township Municipal Building in Atlas that served as the command center for the drug raid, Hollenbush, Shurock and Wilson commended all the officers involved in the bust and promised future raids will be conducted in an ongoing effort to eradicate the drug problem in the coal region of Northumberland County.

Hollenbush, who thanked Mount Carmel Area School District for providing the bus that made transportation efforts easier, said, "We plan to continue to crack down on drug dealers and users and take a pro-active approach to the drug problem in our area. This was another successful raid and we plan on making more."

Shurock added, "This was a great success by the drug task force that resulted in getting more drug dealers off the streets in our communities. We are making these defendants accountable for their actions."

Wilson, who noted no incidents or injuries occurred during the raid, said, "Everyone worked well together and we will continue our battle against drugs in our area."

Owens said police are often criticized for only arresting street-level dealers instead of going after the main suppliers. But the veteran officer said getting the street-level dealers off the streets removes a negative effect in the community because they commit other crimes to support their drug addiction.

"We all want to get at the direct source of the drugs, but getting the dealers helps us reduce other crime in the area such as thefts and burglaries," the sergeant said.

Police said additional charges that resulted from Thursday's drug bust will be filed.

Members of the drug task force participating in the raid included Northumberland County Detective Andrew Orzehowski; Mount Carmel, Mount Carmel Township, Kulpmont, Shamokin, Coal Township, Ralpho Township, Sunbury, Point Township, Danville and Mahoning Township police; state police; state parole officers; Northumberland County Sheriff Chad Reiner; Northumberland County deputy sheriffs and their canine "Clark;" Sunbury Police K-9 Unit and its dog "Rocky;" Northumberland County adult and juvenile probation officers; state constables Larry Rompallo and Harold "Butch" Showers, and emergency medical services personnel from AREA Services.
