SUNBURY - Two male juveniles from the city have been arrested on arson and burglary-related offenses in connection with Monday afternoon's fire at the former Sunbury Middle School at 115 Fairmount Ave.

Sunbury police reported video surveillance from inside the former school was used to help identify the 13-year-old and 14-year-old boys who allegedly spray painted the walls, sprayed fire extinguishers throughout the building and tried to light a room on fire. The teens also are accused of using a broom and spray paint in an attempt to light other items and areas of the building on fire.

The juveniles, who were turned over to the custody of Northumberland County Juvenile Probation Department, were charged with felonies of arson, burglary, criminal trespass, criminal mischief and risking a catastrophe.

The 2:35 p.m. debris fire pressed firefighters from several communities into service and caused smoke and minor interior damage. No one was hurt.

Mark Walberg, of Front Street, Sunbury, is the owner of the building.

Neighbors said several break-ins and another small fire occurred at the former school during the past few months.
