15th annual service for vets at All Saints scheduled for today

KULPMONT - The 15th annual service of tribute and memorial to veterans will be held at 10 a.m. today in All Saints Evangelical Lutheran Church, 12th and Scott streets.

The veterans of the area are cordially invited to come and share in the service, where their fellow veterans will be honored and remembered for their service to the country. Representatives from the Kulpmont American Legion, Commander Ken Sieklicki and Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander Ted Kurasavage will bring greetings on behalf of their organizations and Mayor Robert Slaby will bring greetings from the borough of Kulpmont.

Kurasavage, of Kulpmont, is guest speaker. He is a retired senior chief petty officer, submarines, having served for 21 years. His final duty was as a three-year assistant officer in charge of Mobile Tactical Unit One Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor.

He had served on two fleet alert nuclear and two diesel-electric submarines. His duty took him to Vietnam from 1968 to 1969 and in 1971. In addition to being commander of VFW Post 8354, he is secretary-treasurer for the Overseas Veterans of Kulpmont and a member of the Joint Honor Guard of Mount Carmel, serving at military funerals. He was part of the honor guard that raises the flag at the home games in Mount Carmel.

This service has been an annual event remembering the contribution of the men and women who serve the country in the military.

Special flowers will be placed on the altar in memory of Pfc. Blaine Brown, who was killed in action, and in memory of John Tomtishen a veteran of World War II, by Shirley Tomtishen, sister and wife to the men respectively. Red carnations will be given to the veterans in attendance in memory of Henry, Norman and Willard Hubler by sisters Evelyn Riedel and Shirley Little.

The following will be remembered during the service: August Merker, 1st Lt. Arthur Sauler, Pfc. Blaine Brown, Seaman 1st Class Bernard Miriello, Seaman 1st Class John Wydila, who remains on the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor, sunk in the attack on Dec. 7, 1941, Arthur Chesney, Charles Meisner, Karl Krah (Marine), Daniel Wanzie and Joseph Saukaitis (Navy).

The chaplains from the veterans organizations will offer prayers and "Taps" will be sounded, bringing the special service to a conclusion. The Rev. Alfred J. Bashore, a veteran of World War II, will be in charge of the service.

Serving as communion assistant is Little. Richard Kovach is the lector and Rose Marie Kovach is the organist. Refreshments will be served in the social room of the church following the service. Everyone is invited to come and honor the veterans and those who currently serve our nation.
