1 dead in Rt. 54 crash Danville woman, 80, succumbs to injuries
RALPHO TOWNSHIP - An 80-year-old Danville woman reportedly on her way home from a family reunion died Sunday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Airport Road and Route 54 near All Saints Cemetery.
Stella Adams was pronounced dead on arrival at Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital at 5:31 p.m. by Northumberland County Coroner James F. Kelley.
Kelley said Adams died from blunt force trauma to the head and torso.
Ralpho Township police reported Adams was driving a silver 2005 Pontiac G6 on Airport Road at approximately 4:45 p.m. when she attempted to turn left to travel west on Route 54 toward Elysburg. Police said Adams pulled into the path of a white 1987 International rollback driven east on Route 54 toward Mount Carmel by Donald L. Whalen, 63, of Kulpmont. Police said the rollback struck the driver's side of Adams' car, causing her to suffer fatal injuries.
Whalen was injured and transported by AREA Services Ambulance to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Police did not know the extent of Whalen's injuries, but they were believed not to be serious.
Adams was reportedly returning home from a family reunion at the Blue Church pavilion near Overlook when the accident occurred. She was the lone occupant in the car.
Both vehicles were towed from the scene.
Assisting police were fire and emergency personnel from Elysburg and Ralpho fire companies, Mount Carmel Township police, AREA Services and Life Flight helicopter personnel.
Route 54 was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours due to the accident.
