1 dead in home invasion
NEW RINGGOLD - A home intruder was shot and killed in Schuylkill County on Saturday afternoon, according to state police at Frackville.
Curt Stein, 49, and Melissa Booth, 46, returned to their home at 57 Steep Mountain Road, East Brunswick Township, about 1 mile west of New Ringgold, when they discovered 18-year-old Zachary Foster inside.
Foster, of 150 N. Market St., New Ringgold, had damaged two exterior doors while forcing his way into the home, police said.
According to The Pottsville Republican Herald, Schuylkill County Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan said Stein saw evidence of the break-in when he drove up to his home.
"He had a registered gun and kept it in his vehicle. He had it on him when he investigated the residence. It looked like something was amiss, so he got his gun with him to investigate," Moylan said.
Foster attacked the residents and was shot by Stein, according to police.
Moylan said Foster was shot in the left side of his head, according to The Republican Herald reported.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident was reported at 5:29 p.m.
Moylan said the Foster and Stein families knew one another.
An investigation continues. No charges were filed.
An autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest.
Assisting Trooper John D. Powis are members of the Pennsylvania State Police Major Case Team and Schuylkill County detectives, district attorney and coroner.
