MOUNT CARMEL — An emergency situation involving a meth lab on East Cherry Street between Hickory and Oak streets began shortly before 9 p.m.

A scanner transmission from the scene requested a HAZMAT team for a patient with respiratory burns who needed decontamination. Additional transmissions from the scene requested the team responding from Shamokin to expedite.

The situation began at 8:47 p.m. with a 911 call from a neighbor who said his eyes started to water and his head began to hurt. Another neighbor began to experience the same symptoms, the neighbor said.

Another resident, who lives near the scene witnessed a “ball of flames” shoot from what was believed to be a garage as firefighters were walking toward their apparatus.
