PITTSBURGH (AP) — An autopsy is set on an Allegheny County Jail inmate who died after falling and hitting his head in a sheriff's van that was bringing him back to the jail after a prolonged hospital stay.
County sheriff and jail officials haven't said why 46-year-old Larry Reitz, of White Oak, had been hospitalized.
He died after falling about 6:15 p.m. Monday as he stood up to exit the sheriff's van. He was taken back to the hospital where he had stayed for several weeks — UPMC Mercy — and was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
County homicide detectives are investigating because Reitz was in custody when he died.
He was jailed pending a preliminary hearing on burglary and threat-related charges on Jan. 28.
The county medical examiner planned a Tuesday autopsy.
