Former school superintendent, wife killed in crash
A former superintendent at the Tri-Valley and North Schuylkill school districts and his wife were killed in a one-vehicle crash on Wednesday in Cumberland County.
Robert E. Franklin, 68, and Cheryl W. Franklin, 66, both of Halifax, died at Hershey Medical Center due to serious injuries sustained in the crash, according to Pennsylvania State Police at Carlisle.
Police said Robert Franklin was driving his 2009 Lincoln MKX northbound on Interstate 81 in the passing lane about 2 p.m. when he lost control near mile marker 50 in Middlesex Township, traveled across both lanes, continued off the right side of the road and struck a tree. After the initial impact, the vehicle continued heading north off the right side of the road and struck a fence, then continued traveling into a parking lot, where it struck an unoccupied GMC Sierra. Both Franklins were extricated and flown by Life Lion helicopter to the medical center.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
