Escaped teen still at large

COAL TOWNSHIP — Authorities are continuing their search today for a 17-year-old cadet from the Poconos who escaped from Northwestern Academy early Friday morning after assaulting a staff member with a flashlight.
Coal Township Police Chief William Carpenter said Kyle Ball, who is from Pocono Lake, remains at large.
Ball is described as being 5 feet, 7 inches tall, and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes.
Police initially believed Ball stole a tan Ford Escort from the 1100 block of Chestnut Street in Kulpmont after escaping from the intermediate secure unit at the academy, but now authorities aren’t certain he stole the vehicle, which was found by police at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Seventh and Poplar streets in Mount Carmel.
“We aren’t sure if Ball stole the car,” Carpenter said. “He may have stolen it and ditched it in Mount Carmel after possibly spotting police. Or someone else possibly could have stolen the vehicle.”
But Carpenter learned Monday that a car was reported stolen from Mount Carmel, about a block away from where the Ford Escort was located Saturday. He said that auto was found without damage in Elysburg after apparently running out of gas.
Carpenter said there’s a good possibility Ball may have stolen both vehicles, but police aren’t positive at this point.
Carpenter said police believe Ball may have headed toward the Poconos or possibly Florida, since he has relatives in both areas.
But the police chief warned area residents and business owners to be on the lookout for any suspicious activity since Ball is probably looking for something to eat and warmer clothing. He also reminded residents to keep their homes and vehicles locked since Ball, if he hasn’t fled the area already, will be looking for shelter and transportation.
Carpenter said anyone who observes suspicious activity by a teen matching Ball’s description should contact Coal Township police immediately at 644-0333.
According to Coal Township police, Eugene McGovern, an employee at Northwestern Academy, allowed Ball out of his Black Diamond Mine Dormitory to use the bathroom facility at about 2 a.m. Friday.
Ball allegedly grabbed McGovern’s metal flashlight and repeatedly struck him until he gave up his keys. Once he secured the keys, Ball locked McGovern in his own dormitory room, then fled the premises.
McGovern suffered a concussion and a laceration to his head which required several staples, police said.
Due to the nature and seriousness of the charges, Ball will be charged as an adult.
A warrant has been issued for his arrest on charges of aggravated assault, robbery, escape, simple assault, unlawful detention and theft.
